Bloomington, Ind. – Elliott (Eli) Ubelhor, a graduate of Indiana University, is one of only 114 students selected internationally to attend Peking University in Beijing on a Yenching Scholarship to support graduate study.
The Yenching Academy provides a generous postgraduate scholarship that covers tuition fees, a travel stipend, accommodation, and living costs on Peking University's campus.
Ubelhor graduated from Indiana University with a degree in Central Eurasian Studies and a minor in Religious Studies with a research focus on the people and cultures of the Tibetan Plateau. During his time at Indiana University, he served on the advisory board for the Dean of the School of Global and International Studies, completed research at IU’s Eskenazi Museum of Art under the direction of its Asian art curator, was a founding member of IU’s Arts and Humanities Council, and a student ambassador and orientation leader for incoming international students in China and South Korea during the summer of 2016. His interest in China began when he was in high school, and developed further as he began to take more courses at Indiana University. During his time at the Yenching Academy, Elliott will be concentrating in Chinese History and Archeology.
"I never expected that after four years at Indiana University I would be embarking on a journey that would have me living abroad,” said Ubelhor. “My first reaction was that of gratitude. I wouldn’t have been able to do achieve this milestone without the help from all of my family, friends, professors, and classmates that helped guide me to where I am now."
The Yenching Academy offers a residential program aimed at creating a community of enthusiastic, globally oriented young innovators in the heart of China's top university. The close proximity to the academic infrastructure of Peking University provides a unique opportunity to participate and fully immerse oneself in the life of the university. Indiana University became a partner with the Yenching program in 2017, and Ubelhor is the first IU student to receive this scholarship.
