Meet our Donors

Our generous donors support enriching programming for all IU undergraduate students

With a vast array of programs, it is no surprise that our donors are diverse — including where and how one can choose to direct their support.  Here's your chance to meet a few Undergraduate Education supporters.

Monica Kelley, Class of 2015

Q. How did philanthropy impact your IU experience?

“I actually wasn’t sure if I was going to be able to afford to study abroad, but it’s something I always wanted to do even when studying German in high school. Studying abroad allowed me to learn so much about a different culture and the German language; I saw some beautiful places. It was an experience I’ll never forget. In part, I was able to do that through Hutton International Experiences Program (HIEP).”

Q. Why have you chosen to support HIEP?

“I decided to support HIEP because, when I received a call inviting me to give, I started to think about how important receiving HIEP was to me. Studying abroad was one of the most fantastic experiences of my life, and I’m not sure I’d have been able to do it without HIEP’s help.”

Joe Marxer, Class of 1987

Q. Why have you chosen to support Hutton Honors programs?

“Hutton is inviting; it’s about more than the honors notation on a diploma. There are so many good kids who do good things, and I think Hutton is a good venue to help facilitate that. Also, my kids were recipients of HIEP funds to go abroad, and the impact of the scholarships was clear.”

Q. What does IU mean to you and your family?

“I met my wife at IU, two of my kids graduated from IU and one will shortly. It is a big part of our life in that as a couple and as a family we have IU in common.”

Jackie Harding, Class of 2000

Q. Why have you chosen to support students in transition?

“I knew that without the returning students programs when I was in school, I never would have made it to graduation from IU. Math was my biggest struggle; that lounge had given me the ability to get through it.”

Q. How did philanthropy impact your IU experience?

“My daughter received a generous scholarship that covered two years of tuition at IU. She graduated with no student loans.”

Rachel Tolen, Class of 1985

Q. How did philanthropy impact your IU experience?

“My father worked for the university as a staff member. At that time children of staff members were eligible for a staff scholarship. That was really valuable to me. It was a way of having the staff and their families have access to the university.”

Q. What does IU mean to you and your family?

“My parents didn’t have the opportunity to go to college. We ended up moving here because my father got a job in the Geology Department. It gave us opportunities to explore a world that I don’t think we ever would have connected to. It’s a wonderful place; it really can change people’s lives.”
